3 Ways To Improve Your Workout

I hope I sound like a broken record by now with all my harping on the “training economy.”

People only have a limited time in the gym due to physical and social obligations.  Therefore, it is essential to choose the best exercises that recruit more muscles and builds strength.

Here are some practical ways to recruit more muscles during your training sessions.

  • Always choose REAL primary lifts – oly lifts, bench, squat, deadlift, NOT machine side raises…
  • Incorporate odd objects – sandbag curls (added grip), keg holds (added lats) etc.
  • Focus on free weight training

One of my favorite examples is the Reactive Row from Jim Smith’s Combat Core.  Combat Core is of the best manual’s ever.  Period.  Incredibily innovative and effective, it got a lot of things started for me!  Check it out

    Joe,

I may be off the mark here, but I don’t understand that lift at all. I’m thinking that catching the dumbbell on the way down like that would put you at risk for injury, especially to your shoulder, bicep, or lower back. Maybe you could put out some more info on this one. I’m confused. Loving all the video posts!

  2. Here you go Josh, right from the originator.

    Benefits:

    - improved transverse deceleration of the torso
    - improved anti-rotation / bracing of the torso
    - improved thoracic mobility
    - improved upper body reactivity
    - improved grip strength

    Modifications:

    Increase weight of DB
Remove stability points (hand and knee on bench) and perform free standing

I see your point though, it is NOT FOR BEGINNERS, only for the strong. Adds a great grip and deceleration aspect.

Please keep the comments coming, I don’t mind the questioning at all!

    Joe

    Joe,

Thanks for the info. Makes more sense to me.
